New Scam 06/05/2013

06/05/2013

Sheriff Loe wanted to inform the public that there is a new scam going around the county. This scam involves a computer or laptop that can connect to the internet. If you are a victim of this scam, your computer screen will be “locked” with a text screen on it. The text will read “Your computer has been locked for violating the law of the United States of America.” The “locked” screen will tell you that your computer has been locked by the FBI, and that you must send $300 (or another amount of money) via a green dot money pack in order for your screen to be unlocked. The screen also says that if you do not send the money within seventy-two hours, the FBI will charge you with another fine. We believe this is being done with a virus that can be put on your computer, depending on the sites you view, if your computer is unprotected.

Sheriff Loe wants everyone to be aware that scams can come in many different forms. Be sure to never release any personal information, credit card information, or send money to an organization you are not familiar with. Please contact the proper authorities in your area if you believe you are a victim of a scam.
