Scam Targeting Seniors with Medical Alert Systems

06/13/2013

Sheriff Loe was advised of a scam targeting seniors all over the USA today. Many have reported receiving a phone call from a recorded voice that implies that someone signed them up to receive a free medical alert system, and they are just calling to confirm the shipping address. By pressing the number 5 on a touchtone phone, the automated voice accepts that the consumer wants to confirm a shipping address, and shortly after, consumers are receiving another phone call asking for personal information, credit card information, and in some cases, social security numbers. If consumers accept the medical alert system, they could later be billed for it, costing anywhere from $35 a month, or $817 to $1,602 total. If you receive one of these phone calls, please do not press any buttons, and if someone does talk to you, please do not give out any personal information, including credit card numbers or social security numbers.
