Scam Release

04/10/2014

Sheriff Loe wants the citizens of Columbia County to be reminded that scams can come in all forms, e-mails, letters, phone calls, texts, and even pop-ups while surfing the internet. Never give anyone your personal information, such as address, phone number, social security number, date of birth, or any credit or debit card information. We received word that the scammers are calling claiming to be representatives from UPS needing your address to deliver your $5 million in winnings and your new Mercedes-Benz. We believe the address is just the starting point of the scam as a way to wiggle into getting more information. There is also a letter from “Liberty Financial Incorporated” with a check. Do not cash the check; it is not valid. We have also had reports of scammers requesting to connect to your computer for updating or maintenance. Please do not allow them to connect. They have many capabilities once they get into your computer. Please be careful to who you release your information. If you feel you’ve been a victim of a scam, please contact your local law enforcement office.
